House of Leaves

A novel about a house that is bigger on the inside.

The Book

House of Leaves is an experimental novel by Mark Z. Danielewski. It combines horror, academic commentary, footnotes, letters, and unusual page layouts into a story that constantly shifts beneath the reader.

The Navidson Record

At the center of the novel is a documentary about a family who discovers something impossible inside their home: its interior dimensions are larger than its exterior dimensions.

Soon, a dark hallway appears where no hallway should exist.

The hallway continues.

And continues.

And continues.

Johnny Truant

Another layer follows Johnny Truant, who discovers a strange manuscript written by a dead man named Zampanò. As Johnny edits and reads the manuscript, his own life begins to unravel.

Typography as Storytelling

The physical layout of the novel becomes part of the experience. Some pages contain dense blocks of text, while others contain only a few words. Text may appear sideways, upside down, or scattered across the page.

There is no guarantee that every corridor leads somewhere.

Some only lead deeper.
