History of the Genre
The roots of the metroidvania genre reach back to side-scrolling action games that encouraged map exploration instead of simple stage-by-stage progression.
- Metroid (1986) helped define non-linear exploration and ability-gated progress.
- Super Metroid (1994) became one of the clearest blueprints for the genre.
- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997) added RPG progression and a sprawling castle map.
- Indie developers later expanded the genre with more combat depth, artistic styles, and storytelling.
Today, metroidvanias range from fast-paced combat games to quiet atmospheric adventures, but they all share the idea that the world itself is a puzzle you slowly learn to unlock.
